Sabrina Malheiros is the latest dark-haired chanteuse from Rio whose languid, smoky vocal chords were designed to sing bossa nova and samba, but whose voice doesn't yet possess the essential saudade (melancholy soul) which sets apart geniuses such as Elis Regina and Elza Soares, and even the desafi nado (out of tune) Astrud Gilberto. The key to this seductive record is the music and the celebrated team behind it. At its heart is the narcotically gorgeous samba-fusion music of Azymuth, which in the Seventies created an entire genre. Led by Azymuth co-founders Alex Malheiros, Jose Roberto Bertrami and Ivan Conti, the team turn their attention to the next generation - Alex's daughter, Sabrina.

The other half of the musical equation is rooted in London, with Bluey, the guitarist in jazz-funk pioneers Incognito, introducing some adventurous London soul, and his son, producer DJ Venom, representing the samba-electronica generation. It is he who breaks the beats and adds northern oomph to the Rio languor.Their music envelops Sabrina's vocals in clouds of dreamy keyboards and sambalite percussion; her poetic, allusory lyrics floating on sensuous, late-night fusions of two cultures. Several songs herein are already remix classics, namely Kenny Dope's treatment of 'Estacao Verao' and the UK rare groove classic 'Eu Sou Mais Eu', which is converted from pianist Ana Mazzotti's original into a lively carnival jam.Other highlights include the flute and piano-led 'Cade Voce', 'Capoeira Vai', an upbeat, writhing dance number in funky Incognito style, and the versatile 'Maracatueira', which has also appeared in previous remix incarnations.Sabrina returns to samba for 'Saudade Rio', on which her sensuous voice drops into voguish lightness. Summer, it would appear, is already here.Burn it: 'Estacao Verao'; 'Maracatueira'.
